Information hat immer eine semantische Dimension, die mit Begriffen wie Bedeutung, Sinn, Referenz und Funktion beschrieben werden kann. Die Erforschung der Semantik muß daher eine entscheidende Rolle bei der Analyse komplexer Systeme spielen.
Complex systems in nature and culture use information for the development of their internal organisation and the control of their functional mechanisms. Without the storage, transmission, and processing of information, the evolution of complexity would have been impossible. Information always has a semantic dimension, which can be described in terms of meaning, sense, reference, and function. The study of semantics must therefore play a decisive role in the analysis of complex systems.
